To merge two or more mp3 you will need to get the program called mp3wrap. To split two files you can use program called mp3splt. You can install them by typing:

sudo apt-get install mp3wrap mp3splt

Now you can merge two mp3 files (let’s say 1.mp3 and 2.mp3) by typing:

mp3wrap merged.mp3 2.mp3 1.mp3

note that the merged.mp3 will start with 2.mp3 and finish with 1.mp3

You can split mp3′s now by typing:

mp3splt merged.mp3 0.0 1.2 3.4

this will split file merged.mp3 into two parts:

00:00 – 01:02
01:02 – 03:04

where xx:xx represents minutes:seconds.

If you have problems splitting files merged with mp3wrap delete whatever mp3wrap add to filename and then try again. You shouldn’t experience any problems now.

To see more info on these commands type

man mp3wrap

or

man mp3splt

If you have installed Ubuntu 11.10 (latest version : beta 1, final is coming on Oct 13th) then first you would need to install some basic applications ( Recommended post – top things to do after installing ubuntu 11.10) to begin, e.g a VoIP software – that can be used to make free calls (audio/video) over the internet. Google talk or gtalk is one of such applications but it’s not available for Ubuntu or Linux distros.

For text/voice chat there is another good program – skype, although Ubuntu 11.10 has one such program (installed by default) – Empathy which can be used for text chat, video calls, audio calls etc but skype is probably better than that. Besides text chat or audio/video calls over the web, skype can also make calls to phone/mobile at some rates and one of the most cool feature is audio/video conferencing. Other great features include – screen sharing, file sharing etc.

Skype is based on peer to peer protocol and hence it provides better quality as compared to other chat client. That’s why skype is the most popular chat application. In Ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric ocelot) skype has been added in official package repository – so you can install it in a couple of click, right from the Ubuntu Software Center.

Anybody know how I can fix this?

Answers:

Simply don’t use the ppa, then force the previous packages to downgrade (from synaptic menu: select firefox then package force), or there may be an add-on conflict

firefox -safe-mode

Try disabling some one at a time till you find the issue I’m not having any issues i got a performance boot it feels like. Sadly I found out that ff7 will have much better memory usage now I am already impatient about getting it.

What’s new : Firefox 6

The address bar now highlights the domain of the website you’re visiting

Streamlined the look of the site identity block

Added support for the latest draft version of WebSockets with a prefixed API

Added support for EventSource / server-sent events

Added Scratchpad, an interactive JavaScript prototyping environment

Added a new Web Developer menu item and moved development-related items into it

Improved usability of the Web Console

Improved the discoverability of Firefox Sync

Reduced browser startup time when using Panorama

Mozilla Firefox (One of the most popular open source web browser) has just released its next stable version – Firefox 5 with some new features and improvements. The version 5.0 is available for Linux, Mac , Windows and Android operating system. Now, Firefox has very high release frequency, probably due to the fact that – they want to deliver all the innovative features quickly to the users, new version has arrived with a of performance tweaks and enhancements.

If you are using Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal), you got version 4.0 installed by default; now it’s time to either update it or install a fresh version of Firefox 5, on the other hand if you are using older version of Ubuntu (The most appropriate reason would be the ‘critical bugs of Ubuntu 11.04′) such as Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) or Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) then also the procedure would be same.

The major feature which is included in this release is “Do Not Track on Multiple platform feature” which provides more control to users about how their data or behavior is used or tacked on the web.

Upgrading Firefox to Latest version in Ubuntu

If you have installed Firefox from PPA or Synaptic Package Manager, then it will be updated along with the system update. Move to System -> Administration -> Update Manager and click on Check to update the cache (About the current Packages). If you are using the Firefox version installed by default (it’s most likely the case if you are using Ubuntu 11.04, but within few days it must be available under official repository of Ubuntu 11.04) then the latest version may not show up in the update manager, then first add this PPA (Personal Package Archive) address to Synaptic Package Manager ->Settings -> Repositories.

ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa

Now, search for Firefox 5 for in Synaptic Package Manager, right click and select Upgrade option. it will hardly take a couple of minutes.

Run the following commands ( then update your browser using Update Manage Manager if you don’t want to update other packages, in this case execute only first 2 commands at terminal).

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa

A Firewall is a program (software) or a device which allows us to set different types of rules for a network i.e how the packets will be treated at different ports ..and it’s very widely used in protecting a computer from unauthorized/unwanted access through a network. Due to an exponential growth in computer related crimes, Firewall is a mandatory application for every computer users.

Ubuntu 11.04 – Natty Narwhal or any other Linux distros is very secure by default as they have built in firewalls running by default. So normal Ubuntu users do not need any firewall (Unlike the windows users do because Windows is insecure by default! , Comodo is an excellent firewall for Windows users) in order to protect themselves from crackers or hackers or cyber criminals.

So in this post you will learn how to install a front end for UFW, Firewal Configuration (gufw), to manage and configure UFW easily in GUI mode. gufw is a simple (probably the best and fast) firewall configuration software that works! and got 5 star in Ubuntu Software Center ratings. You may need to enable (by check the square box) the universe repository in Synaptic Package Manager -> Settings ->Repositories -> Ubuntu Software .

Open Ubuntu Software Center and search for ‘gufw’.

Then, click on install button in the search result, and enter your login password if required.

Now, wait for the installation to complete ..relax it will hardly take a minute..

MPlayer is a movie player which runs on many systems (see the documentation). It plays most MPEG/VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, RealMedia, Matroska, NUT, NuppelVideo, FLI, YUV4MPEG, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, and Win32 DLL codecs. You can watch VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, DivX 3/4/5, WMV and even H.264 movies.

Another great feature of MPlayer is the wide range of supported output drivers. It works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, AAlib, DirectFB, but you can use GGI, SDL (and this way all their drivers), VESA (on every VESA compatible card, even without X11!) and some low level card-specific drivers (for Matrox, 3Dfx and ATI), too! Most of them support software or hardware scaling, so you can enjoy movies in fullscreen. MPlayer supports displaying through some hardware MPEG decoder boards, such as the Siemens DVB, DXR2 and DXR3/Hollywood+.

MPlayer has an onscreen display (OSD) for status information, nice big antialiased shaded subtitles and visual feedback for keyboard controls. European/ISO 8859-1,2 (Hungarian, English, Czech, etc), Cyrillic and Korean fonts are supported along with 12 subtitle formats (MicroDVD, SubRip, OGM, SubViewer, Sami, VPlayer, RT, SSA, AQTitle, JACOsub, PJS and our own: MPsub). DVD subtitles (SPU streams, VOBsub and Closed Captions) are supported as well.
License

MPlayer is available under the GNU General Public License version 2. It is not available under any other licensing terms, not even for substantial amounts of money. If you have questions about the GNU GPL, consult the GPL FAQ.

YouTube is the most popular video sharing site on this planet. Some videos (specifically educational videos/tutorials or class lectures) are officially available for download; In the case, if you liked the video (specifically Music related stuffs) very much, then it is most likely the case that ‘you will watch it again and again’; so having a local copy of that video, isn’t a good idea, of course it is! it won’t only save your bandwidth consumption but also good for other users (Human). But it may be illegal, so use the videos for personal purposes only.

In this you will learn – how to download youtube videos using some command line tool or plugins in Mozilla Firefox, on Ubuntu 11.04 (Alias : Natty Narwhal). The both of the methods – one using youtube-dl utility and the other using are explained below :

Downloading YouTube Videos on Ubuntu 11.04

Method #1 : Using Command Line Tool

Open terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and enter the following commands -

sudo apt-get install youtube-dl

When you have installed the above tool
(open the video of its website and copy the URL : ‘http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWevG2BlH3k ‘ ), Then download that video with with one simple command -

youtube-dl “URL_Of_The_Target_Video”

Method #2 : Using Plugin with Firefox

If you are looking for GUI method, then use a Firefox plugin like – ‘Download Flash and Video’. To install a plugin either search for it from the browser itself or download it from the given link – YouTube Video Downloader. Install it and restart your browser. Now you will notice a download icon on Bottom Right Corner. To download any youtube videos, just open that video and click on download icon..that’s all.
