It is with sad hearts that the Red Hat community mourns the passing of computing pioneer Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie. Dennis Ritchie was the principal designer of the C programming language and co-developer of the Unix operating system, working closely with Ken Thompson, his longtime Bell Labs collaborator.

Many of us have a proud history of involvement in the UNIX operating system well before the emergence of Linux. To the UNIX world, Ritchie and Thompson were as influential as Linus Torvalds is today to the Linux community. Unix and C’s direct and spiritual descendants cannot be counted, but include Linux, Android, Mac OS, iOS, JavaScript, C++, the genius of the internet, and a planet of developers. The major impact of UNIX is not so much in the elegant code itself but rather in the culture of sharing work across industry and academia that became UNIX’s hallmark. Prior to UNIX, operating system code was locked in corporate vaults – inaccessible to the masses. UNIX flung open these doors by allowing code to be shared among software engineers across the nascent computer industry, ushering in an unprecedented wave of collaborative development – and, at the same time, liberating many applications from being locked into a single proprietary hardware vendor.

UNIX code was also shared with universities where it became the foundation of the learning and advancement of operating system practices. Similarly, the C programming language became a staple of the computer science classroom. Many of us literally grew up in Dennis’ technical shadow and still have his book, The C Programming Language, co-authored with Brian Kernighan and more fondly referred to as K & R, on our shelves. It remains a source of inspiration and practical help to programmers to this day.

Most of what we do is heavily influenced by Dennis’s outstanding contributions – both in the technical arena and as a founder of the concept of community development. We at Red Hat look with awe and reverence on his legacy.

YouTube is the most popular video sharing site – or I can say it has videos about everything. When you’re watching videos on YouTube (Suppose You’re using Ubuntu 11.10) and some of them are such videos that you watch often – repeatedly, in that case you might want to download/save it to your computer’s hard drive. That’s why, in this post you learn how to download YouTube videos/movies while using Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot), although tips is applicable for other Linux distro (Linux Mint, Fedora, OpenSuse, Debian etc) too.

How to download videos using MiniTube

it’s pretty simple, first play the video (you want to download), then click on Video -> Download and you’re done! The downloading process will be started, and by default the videos will be saved to /home/Videos. Then you will immediately notice a download section(link) in bottom, click on that for more information about the download (look at the snapshot).

2. Browsers Add-ons/Extensions

If you surf a lot and spends a lot of time with web browsers such as Firefox or Google Chrome then you might want to download YouTube videos, right from the browser (while playing videos).

Extension for Chrome Users : 

There is an extension called ‘YouTube Downloader’, developed by YouTube and Chrome Team (Google Inc). it will allow you save YouTube videos in three formats – mp4, mp3 and FLV.

To download videos from command line – first install a utility – youtube-dl. Open terminal and execute -

Now, open the video in browser and copy the URL from the address bar. Then execute the following command -

To merge two or more mp3 you will need to get the program called mp3wrap. To split two files you can use program called mp3splt. You can install them by typing:

sudo apt-get install mp3wrap mp3splt

Now you can merge two mp3 files (let’s say 1.mp3 and 2.mp3) by typing:

mp3wrap merged.mp3 2.mp3 1.mp3

note that the merged.mp3 will start with 2.mp3 and finish with 1.mp3

You can split mp3′s now by typing:

mp3splt merged.mp3 0.0 1.2 3.4

this will split file merged.mp3 into two parts:

00:00 – 01:02
01:02 – 03:04

where xx:xx represents minutes:seconds.

If you have problems splitting files merged with mp3wrap delete whatever mp3wrap add to filename and then try again. You shouldn’t experience any problems now.

Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot has released its second alpha. In Ubuntu Oneiric, it starts using LightDM as default to instead Gnome Display Manager(GDM). If you have upgraded to or new installed Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric, you might want to change the LightDM login screen background. And it’s easy, just open up a terminal window and edit the configuration file with the command below(Here unity-greeter.conf is the default theme’s configuration file, it changes depend on what greeter theme you’re using) :

gksu gedit /etc/lightdm/unity-greeter.conf

Find the similar line:

background=/PATH/TO/Login/Background

Change the path to any image as you like.

My upgrade to Linux Ubuntu 10.04 went very well (previously 9.04), except for my microphone (I have an HP 8530 w elitebook). Sound plays perfectly, and I can hear myself typing and speaking (i.e. the internal microphone loops back to the speakers) but it never works for skype/ audacity / etc.). Everything worked perfectly in 9.04.

I tried many fixes for microphone problems posted here, to no avail. I played around with pavucontrols and alsamixer, tried many suggested options in modrpobe/alsa.conf, and made sure that nothing is muted. pavucontrols shows only one input device instead of two (my internal microphone and the microphone jacks for an external one), and an external microphone somehow works, but way too silent (I can hear a lot of static hiss and my own voice very silently in an external microphone).

Answer :

Finally fixed: After trying different options for two days, I simply purged PulseAudio from my system, and replaced it with esound using “Howto solve all PulseAudio-related issues in Ubuntu” Everything worked fine again without additional tuning.

I have the Firefox PPA set. It updated today to Firefox 6. Ever since I cannot access my Add-ons. It just says Loading, and never stops.

Anybody know how I can fix this?

Answers:

Simply don’t use the ppa, then force the previous packages to downgrade (from synaptic menu: select firefox then package force), or there may be an add-on conflict

Try disabling some one at a time till you find the issue I’m not having any issues i got a performance boot it feels like. Sadly I found out that ff7 will have much better memory usage now I am already impatient about getting it.

Linux users seem to be interested in what our de facto leader uses on his desktop. In 2005 KDE users reveled when Linus said, “just … use KDE.” Later on in 2009 GNOME users returned the nose rubbing when he said, “I switched to GNOME.” Well, both groups can now sulk together because Linus has switched again and this time he’s “using Xfce.”

KDE

Yes, once upon a time KDE was king and even Linus Torvalds, the original Linux programmer, was using it. He said, ” I personally just encourage people to switch to KDE.” The gripe at the time was that GNOME dumbed down their interface and folks who liked more control usually chose KDE. As Linus put it, “This “users are idiots, and are confused by functionality” mentality of Gnome is a disease. If you think your users are idiots, only idiots will use it. I don’t use Gnome, because in striving to be simple, it has long since reached the point where it simply doesn’t do what I need it to do. Please, just tell people to use KDE.” Perhaps this is when the thread at KDE snapped. Because it would be only a few years before KDE 4 appeared and ran off Linus with a lot of regular users.

GNOME

As Linus said, ” I used to be a KDE user. I thought KDE 4.0 was such a disaster, I switched to GNOME. I hate the fact that my right button doesn’t do what I want it to do. But the whole “break everything” model is painful for users, and they can choose to use something else. I realize the reason for the 4.0 release, but I think they did it badly. They did so many changes, it was a half-baked release.” And that about sums it right up. Although as Linus thought, KDE 4 did improve since its initial release, but to many users it still feels like work in process.

Xfce

Ah, then GNOME developers followed KDE with their own mess. GNOME 3 was released a few months ago to very mixed reviews. Most of the complaints revolve around a muddled work flow and difficulty getting anything done when using it. This is sort of what Linus just said. “I have yet to meet anybody who likes the unholy mess that is gnome-3.”

He later continued, “it’s that the user experience of Gnome3 even without rendering problems is unacceptable. Why can’t I have shortcuts on my desktop? Why can’t I have the expose functionality? Wobbly windows? Why does anybody sane think that it’s a good idea to have that “go to the crazy ‘activities’” menu mode?”

Linus elaborated, “Here’s an example of “the crazy”: you want a new terminal window. So you go to “activities” and press the “terminal” thing that you’ve made part of your normal desktop thing (but why can’t I just have it on the desktop, instead of in that insane “activities” mode?). What happens? Nothing. It brings your existing terminal to the forefront. That’s just crazy crap.”

Our fearless leader finally reveals, ” I’m using Xfce. I think it’s a step down from gnome2, but it’s a huge step up from gnome3. Really.”

But I think he sums it up best for all of us using KDE, GNOME, and Unity these last few years: “I want my sane interfaces back.”

What’s new since Alpha 2?

The latest experimental snapshots of Compiz and Unity are provided in Alpha 3, with notable new features, options and changes including visual feedback on the trash icon when dropping files into it, improved launcher reveal logic, and a newly coloured ‘Grid’ highlight.

An all new Gwibber is present, boasting a brand new look, slick animated transitions and massively improved performance.

Indicators

It’s all change on the Indicator front with the removal of the Me Menu; a rejigged ‘Messaging Menu’; a new-look session indicator and the arrival of a brand new power indicator (that, joy of joys, is able to actually report you battery life!).

Support for middle-clicking on indicators has also been introduced, but until developers get chance to play around with it don’t expect too much from this just yet.

I just upgraded to the Natty beta and I’m getting this error message every time I try to log in.

Failed to load session “ubuntu”

I have tried using every session available: Ubuntu, Classic Ubuntu, Unity-2d, and Gnome Shell. The only one that allows me to log in is Gnome Shell, but it doesn’t actually load Gnome Shell; it loads a gnome panel, but compositing/compiz doesn’t work.

I’m so confused, and I have no idea how to fix this or what is causing it. I would like to be able to try out Unity, but none of the sessions work except for this false Gnome Shell session.

Answer :

Well, I have no idea what caused this… but it seems to have been some kind of package dependency problem. The packages were all a mess and I ended up just uninstalling and reinstalling everything and now it’s working.
