This is a simple tutorial about how to get “power off” and “Restart” options in gnome-shell user account menu.

When I first time using Gnome 3, I didn’t find shutdown/restart button anywhere. I shut down and reboot my machine via command in terminal. You might get the same problem if you’re new to gnome-shell. And here’s a tip to figure it out:

Click on the user account at top-right corner. And press down Alt key, you’ll see the downmost option “Suspend” becomes “Power Off…”.

Click on it and you’ll see shutdown/restart options.

My upgrade to Linux Ubuntu 10.04 went very well (previously 9.04), except for my microphone (I have an HP 8530 w elitebook). Sound plays perfectly, and I can hear myself typing and speaking (i.e. the internal microphone loops back to the speakers) but it never works for skype/ audacity / etc.). Everything worked perfectly in 9.04.

I tried many fixes for microphone problems posted here, to no avail. I played around with pavucontrols and alsamixer, tried many suggested options in modrpobe/alsa.conf, and made sure that nothing is muted. pavucontrols shows only one input device instead of two (my internal microphone and the microphone jacks for an external one), and an external microphone somehow works, but way too silent (I can hear a lot of static hiss and my own voice very silently in an external microphone).

Answer :

Finally fixed: After trying different options for two days, I simply purged PulseAudio from my system, and replaced it with esound using “Howto solve all PulseAudio-related issues in Ubuntu” Everything worked fine again without additional tuning.

I just upgraded to the Natty beta and I’m getting this error message every time I try to log in.

Failed to load session “ubuntu”

I have tried using every session available: Ubuntu, Classic Ubuntu, Unity-2d, and Gnome Shell. The only one that allows me to log in is Gnome Shell, but it doesn’t actually load Gnome Shell; it loads a gnome panel, but compositing/compiz doesn’t work.

I’m so confused, and I have no idea how to fix this or what is causing it. I would like to be able to try out Unity, but none of the sessions work except for this false Gnome Shell session.

Well, I have no idea what caused this… but it seems to have been some kind of package dependency problem. The packages were all a mess and I ended up just uninstalling and reinstalling everything and now it’s working.

Mozilla Firefox (One of the most popular open source web browser) has just released its next stable version – Firefox 5 with some new features and improvements. The version 5.0 is available for Linux, Mac , Windows and Android operating system. Now, Firefox has very high release frequency, probably due to the fact that – they want to deliver all the innovative features quickly to the users, new version has arrived with a of performance tweaks and enhancements.

If you are using Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal), you got version 4.0 installed by default; now it’s time to either update it or install a fresh version of Firefox 5, on the other hand if you are using older version of Ubuntu (The most appropriate reason would be the ‘critical bugs of Ubuntu 11.04′) such as Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) or Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) then also the procedure would be same.

The major feature which is included in this release is “Do Not Track on Multiple platform feature” which provides more control to users about how their data or behavior  is used or tacked on the web.

Upgrading Firefox to Latest version in Ubuntu

If you have installed Firefox from PPA or Synaptic Package Manager, then it will be updated along with the system update. Move to System -> Administration -> Update Manager and click on Check to update the cache (About the current Packages). If you are using the Firefox version installed by default (it’s most likely the case if you are using Ubuntu 11.04, but within few days it must be available under official repository of Ubuntu 11.04) then the latest version may not show up in the update manager, then first add this PPA (Personal Package Archive) address to Synaptic Package Manager ->Settings -> Repositories.

Now, search for Firefox 5 for in Synaptic Package Manager, right click and select Upgrade option. it will hardly take a couple of minutes.

Alternative way of installing Firefox on Ubuntu

Run the following commands ( then update your browser using Update Manage Manager if you don’t want to update other packages, in this case execute only first 2 commands at terminal).

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa

Download Firefox 5 for Ubuntu

Download the Firefox tar.bz2 file from its official website, and execute -run-mozilla.sh file, after extraction (tar -xf mozilla-5.tar.bz2).

Advanced or ‘geeky’ Ubuntu users may need (or they just want to do that for learning purposes) to set inbound and outbound traffic rules/policies manually for any ports (I mean virtual or software ports), In that case you just need to use UFW (Uncomplicated Firewall; a frontend of IPtables, which works as an interface to netfilter (Package Filtering System provided by Linux Kernel)) , which is installed by default on all Ubuntu versions, but by default it has only Command Line Interface. So in this post you will learn how to install a front end for UFW, Firewal Configuration (gufw), to manage and configure UFW easily in GUI mode. gufw is a simple (probably the best and fast) firewall configuration software that works! and got 5 star in Ubuntu Software Center ratings. You may need to enable (by check the square box) the universe repository in Synaptic Package Manager -> Settings ->Repositories -> Ubuntu Software .

I have looked this up online, and all the explanations I have found so far are extremely confusing (and don’t make any sense to me). My problem is that after upgrading my ubuntu version my headphones stopped working. My speakers work, but turn off when my headphones are put in (as they should). However no sound can be heard at that time.

I have heard some vague ambiguous explanations talking about:

• Alsa Mixer
• Volume control (the same thing?)

But so far no solution ?

Sorry about that hasty answer. I meant to say that you have to look for your soundcard and add the line corresponding to your hardware at the end of alsa-base.conf as follows:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Save and reboot. Voilà, your headphones should be working now! (Just keep in mind that you need to switch between “analog output” and “analog headphones” in the sound settings manager depending on which one you wanna use.

If it’s an integrated sound chip, you might be able to have your headphones back by adding “options snd-hda-intel model=*****” or “options snd-hda-intel model=***** position_fix=*” (without the quotes) at the end of alsabase.conf file, just as I explained in my previous post. All you need to do is to merely copy-paste it after all the text in that .conf file.

If your computer is a laptop, the line should be provided in that list. By the way. If your computer isn’t a laptop, then, you should try “auto” for the model and “0,” “1” or “2” for the position. Hope you got it working this time around.

2) Now you need to create new vitual machine after that open VM go to settings and click on display check “Enable 3D Acceleration” option

3) Download ubuntu 11.04 latest from here and install ubuntu 11.04

After completing the ubuntu 11.04 installation you need to install Virtualbox guest additions for this you need to click on Devices–>Installguest additions this wll start a VBoxLinuxAdditions.run script so you need to run this script when it is done close the terminal and restart your ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine.
